Thanks to its inherent antibacterial and biodegradable properties, bamboo toothbrushes are increasingly becoming popular with younger generations.
There is no doubt about the fact that switching to a bamboo toothbrush helps save the environment, especially the oceans, from being destroyed. According to one estimate, one billion toothbrushes (plastic) are thrown out every year in the United States only. Even if we take into account a conservative figure, there are over 3 billion toothbrushes that are disposed of annually.
“Using a bamboo toothbrush is as effective as a manual plastic toothbrush. The difference is that the handle is made from bamboo which is strong, biodegradable and has no negative impact on the planet. The only precaution one has to take is to keep the toothbrush clean, fresh, and in good working order. It is a great eco-friendly alternative. Brush with mild pressure in circular motions away from the gum line, then back and forth across all surfaces in your mouth,” says Tanishq Gupta, Co-founder, Earthum, a brand that deals in sustainable products.
Being a plant, bamboo can be cultivated over and over again without harming the environment. Based on current trends, the possibility of some plastic waste ending up in the ocean, and endangering marine life, is high. With awareness rising, young people are switching to this alternative option.
“The plastic toothbrush we use today will last for a few generations. Be the change and use a biodegradable bamboo toothbrush. The bristles are typically nylon and can be removed with a pair of pliers before disposing of. These brushes also use zero-waste packaging,” informs Sabbar Tousif, an environmentalist based out of Delhi.
