Over the past two months, Delhi has witnessed a surge in respiratory and cardiac issues among its residents, attributable to the city’s deteriorating air quality. Reports indicate an alarming increase in cases of asthma, bronchitis, and cardiac complications, particularly among the elderly and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.
Dr. Dixit Thakur, a Pulmonologist at Apollo Spectra Delhi, Chirag Enclave, expressed concern over the escalating health crisis. “With levels of particulate matter (PM) reaching hazardous levels, the impact on respiratory and cardiac health is becoming increasingly evident,” he emphasized. “There is a spike in cases of asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses, while individuals with pre-existing heart conditions are experiencing exacerbated symptoms.”
The presence of smog and high pollutant levels in the air have been directly linked to respiratory issues such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and bronchitis, as well as an increase in cardiovascular diseases, Dr. Thakur explained. Common symptoms include coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and sore throat. Urgent action is imperative to address this pressing issue and enhance air quality for the well-being of residents, he emphasized.
To mitigate the effects of pollution, experts recommend investing in high-quality air purifiers with HEPA filters to improve indoor air quality. They advise limiting outdoor activities during peak pollution hours, typically early morning and late evening, and opting for indoor exercises to reduce exposure to toxic pollutants. Wearing masks when venturing outdoors can also help protect respiratory and cardiac health.
As Delhi grapples with the consequences of poor air quality, concerted efforts are needed to combat this public health crisis and safeguard the health of its citizens.
“The extension to all peoples of the benefits of medical, psychological and related knowledge is essential to the fullest attainment of health.” “Health is a state of complete mental, social and physical well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
