The Union government is set to strengthen India’s digital healthcare ecosystem with the launch of e-Sushrut Clinic, an affordable cloud-based Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) designed specifically for small healthcare facilities across the country. Developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the platform aims to help small clinics, primary health centres, health and wellness centres, sub-centres, and private outpatient facilities digitise their routine operations at a nominal cost.
The initiative seeks to address a long-standing challenge faced by smaller healthcare providers, many of whom continue to rely on paper-based records because existing hospital management software is often too expensive and technically complex. To encourage digital adoption, the government has introduced e-Sushrut Clinic at a subsidised subscription fee of ₹299 per month, following a free three-month trial period. The affordable pricing is expected to make digital healthcare management accessible to thousands of small medical establishments across India.
The cloud-based platform automates several administrative and clinical functions that are essential for day-to-day healthcare operations. These include patient registration, appointment management, billing, electronic medical records, management information system (MIS) reporting, speech-to-text clinical documentation, and clinical decision support. By simplifying these processes, the system is expected to reduce paperwork, improve operational efficiency, and enable healthcare providers to focus more on patient care.
A key feature of e-Sushrut Clinic is its integration with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), allowing healthcare facilities to become part of India’s growing digital health network. The platform supports the creation and management of digital health records while ensuring interoperability between healthcare providers. Through ABDM integration, patients will be able to securely access and share their health information with authorised medical professionals, promoting continuity of care and reducing duplication of medical records.
The platform has been designed with ease of use in mind, requiring minimal technical expertise for implementation and operation. According to officials, only healthcare professionals registered under the Health Professional Registry (HPR) will be eligible to use the system, while participating healthcare facilities will also need to be integrated with the Health Facility Registry (HFR) as part of the onboarding process. These measures are intended to ensure standardisation and maintain the integrity of the country’s digital health infrastructure.
Government data indicates that the platform has already been piloted successfully, with more than 800 healthcare facilities onboarded and over 680,000 digital health records generated during the initial implementation phase. The encouraging response has demonstrated the potential of the system to improve healthcare delivery at the grassroots level by making digital tools accessible even to smaller medical establishments.
The launch of e-Sushrut Clinic forms part of a broader package of digital health initiatives being introduced by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Alongside the new HMIS, the government is rolling out Aarogya Setu 2.0, the Ayushman App, the Ayushman Sarathi Chatbot, the National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX), and new health data standards to strengthen India’s Digital Public Infrastructure for Health. Together, these initiatives are aimed at improving interoperability, streamlining healthcare services, and enhancing access to quality care across the country.
By offering an affordable and user-friendly digital management solution, e-Sushrut Clinic is expected to accelerate the digital transformation of India’s primary healthcare sector. The initiative has the potential to improve record-keeping, enhance patient experience, reduce administrative burdens, and support more efficient healthcare delivery, particularly in small and underserved medical facilities across the country.
