India and Japan have taken another significant step towards strengthening their long-standing partnership by expanding cooperation in the fields of healthcare, medical devices and advanced technologies. During a high-level meeting held in New Delhi, Japan’s Minister for Science and Technology, Onoda Kimi, met Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh to explore new avenues of collaboration aimed at driving innovation and improving public health outcomes.
Addressing the meeting, Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the strong and natural partnership between India and Japan in science and technology. He noted that both countries possess complementary strengths that can be leveraged to accelerate research, innovation and the development of advanced technologies. According to him, greater collaboration would help transform scientific discoveries into practical solutions that benefit society while also creating opportunities for economic growth and industrial development.
The discussions primarily focused on enhancing cooperation in the health and medical devices sector. Both sides recognised the growing importance of jointly developing modern healthcare technologies to address emerging health challenges. The collaboration is expected to encourage research partnerships, innovation in medical devices and improved access to advanced healthcare solutions.
Dr. Singh also underlined India’s rapid progress in frontier technologies. He said the country’s national missions in Quantum Technologies, Cyber-Physical Systems, Electric Mobility, Clean Energy and Advanced Computing are opening new opportunities for international collaboration. These initiatives reflect India’s commitment to promoting deep-tech research and creating an innovation-driven economy. He added that partnerships with technologically advanced nations like Japan would further strengthen India’s scientific capabilities and support the development of cutting-edge solutions.
Speaking during the interaction, Japanese Minister Onoda Kimi praised India’s remarkable economic growth and its increasing emphasis on innovation. She appreciated India’s widespread adoption of artificial intelligence across multiple sectors and expressed confidence that the agreements exchanged during the meeting would pave the way for deeper cooperation in research, technology development and industrial applications. She observed that the complementary strengths of both countries can help create globally competitive technologies while addressing shared healthcare priorities.
A major outcome of the meeting was the exchange of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in the field of health and medical devices. The agreement aims to facilitate closer collaboration among research institutions and promote joint initiatives in medical technology. Alongside the MoC, both countries also exchanged a Letter of Intent on cooperation in Quantum Science and Technology, signalling their commitment to expanding collaboration in emerging scientific fields.
The Ministry of Science and Technology stated that these agreements represent an important milestone in the growing India-Japan strategic partnership. The initiatives are expected to encourage joint research projects, knowledge exchange, innovation and stronger industrial cooperation, particularly in healthcare technologies and advanced scientific research. The strengthened partnership reflects the shared vision of both nations to use science, technology and innovation for sustainable development and improved quality of life.
