India’s new appetite: How GLP-1 is changing food & health

The rise of GLP-1 use is signalling a wider shift towards mindful eating, preventive care and more deliberate health decisions among Indian consumers.

India’s new appetite: How GLP-1 is changing food & health

India’s healthcare environment is seeing a gradual change in the way consumers approach their health. People are becoming more conscious of everyday choices—from controlling portion sizes and checking nutrition labels to paying closer attention to symptoms that do not go away. Health awareness is increasingly shaping behaviour outside the traditional doctor-patient setting.

The rising adoption of GLP-1 medications is contributing to this shift. New research from IFF indicates that Indian consumers using GLP-1 drugs are doing more than simply eating smaller quantities. Their relationship with food is changing, influencing what they select, how they experience meals and how they engage in social eating. This could create new opportunities for the food and beverage sector.

Meanwhile, seasonal respiratory illnesses are reinforcing the importance of preventive healthcare, particularly the need to recognise prolonged symptoms and seek timely testing instead of assuming they are routine seasonal infections.

Smaller Portions, Higher Expectations

IFF’s recent study, Inside the India GLP-1 Consumer Journey, examined GLP-1 users across Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The findings were presented at IFF’s Eat Smart Asia: The GLP-1 Shift symposium in New Delhi, building on the company’s 2025 GLP-1 Consumer Opportunity Outlook.

According to the research, 74% of respondents have become more attentive to food labels since starting GLP-1 medication. Around 90% said the medication has changed the way food tastes or feels, while 50% prefer softer and easier-to-digest textures. At the same time, 69% continue to look for a balance between strong flavour and their changing dietary needs.

Harsch Koshti, regional marketing director at IFF Taste for Greater Asia, said the impact of changing appetite goes beyond simply reducing food intake. According to him, consumers are developing a different relationship with food, including how they select, enjoy and take part in eating occasions.

The change is reflected in everyday Indian meals. Some consumers reported reducing their intake from three or four chapatis to one or two, cutting down from five or six idlis to two, and reducing rice consumption from roughly 2.5 bowls to half a bowl.

However, smaller portions do not necessarily mean food has become less important. Instead, consumers may be placing greater value on nutrition, taste, texture and the feeling of satisfaction from each serving. This presents food manufacturers with an opportunity to create products that deliver greater nutritional and sensory value in smaller portions.

Beverages are also part of this evolving behaviour. IFF reported that 74% of respondents view hydration as an important daily wellness priority, with options such as coconut water and electrolyte drinks gaining attention.

For the food and beverage industry, this suggests that the opportunity may be broader than simply introducing products labelled as “GLP-1-friendly”. Consumers could increasingly seek products that combine nutrition, flavour, convenience and flexible serving sizes while still fitting comfortably into familiar Indian food habits.

A Growing Focus on Prevention

The broader shift towards health-conscious behaviour is also evident in how consumers respond to illness. During the monsoon season, respiratory infections can sometimes be mistaken for ordinary seasonal sickness, making it important to pay attention when symptoms persist.

Dr Mayanka Lodha Seth, chief pathologist at Redcliffe Labs, said the rise in H1N1 cases in Delhi serves as a reminder that respiratory symptoms should not always be dismissed. She noted that persistent fever, cough or breathing difficulties deserve medical attention, particularly among older adults, young children, pregnant women and people with existing health conditions.

While many flu-like illnesses resolve on their own, Seth recommended testing when symptoms continue. Testing can help doctors determine whether the illness is influenza or another infection, allowing appropriate treatment to begin earlier and potentially limiting complications and transmission.

She also highlighted the broader value of early detection. Preventive healthcare becomes more effective when symptoms are identified at an early stage, while easier access to testing and greater awareness can help prevent minor health concerns from developing into more serious problems.

The GLP-1 trend and the growing emphasis on H1N1 testing are not directly connected. However, both reflect a broader change in consumer behaviour: people are becoming more attentive to their health and more intentional about the decisions they make.

Healthier Choices Without Leaving Tradition Behind

Despite changing individual preferences, established household food habits remain strong. IFF found that 78% of respondents still purchase biscuits for their families, while 71% continue buying packaged sweets and full-fat dairy products. Around 63% also continue purchasing fried snacks.

Social eating remains equally relevant. About 64% of respondents said they experience some level of discomfort around social eating occasions. This indicates that consumers may want to manage portions and make healthier choices without giving up family meals, familiar foods and social traditions.

For India’s food, beverage and healthcare sectors, the emerging opportunity therefore goes beyond developing individual products or responding to GLP-1 medications. The bigger opportunity may be understanding a consumer who wants more information, better nutritional value and greater control over daily health choices—without abandoning the foods, routines and social experiences that remain an important part of everyday life.

As Koshti noted, businesses have an important opportunity to understand these emerging behaviours and use innovation to respond to them. For companies, this could mean developing products and services that make healthier decisions simpler while allowing consumers to stay connected to India’s familiar food culture and social eating habits.
