Ozempic may be linked to Lower Stroke and Alzheimer’s risk study finds

A new genetic study links Ozempic-related effects to lower odds of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease, but more research is needed to confirm benefits.

Ozempic may be linked to Lower Stroke and Alzheimer’s risk study finds

A new genetic study suggests that GLP-1 medicines could be linked to better brain health, but researchers say more evidence is needed before they can be considered preventive treatments.

A medicine widely known for treating type 2 diabetes and supporting weight loss may offer new clues about brain health. A study published on September 25, 2026, in Neurology: Genetics has linked the biological effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists, including Ozempic, to lower odds of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.

The research found that genetically predicted effects associated with GLP-1 receptor activity were linked to 25% lower odds of stroke and 49% lower odds of Alzheimer’s disease. The analysis also showed 28% lower odds of ischaemic stroke and 45% lower odds of cardioembolic stroke.

Researchers used a method called Mendelian randomisation, which examines genetic variations to explore possible cause-and-effect relationships. The study drew on large genetic datasets representing people of European, East Asian and African ancestry.

How Could Ozempic Affect Brain Health?

Ozempic contains semaglutide, a medicine that mimics the GLP-1 hormone. This hormone helps regulate blood sugar, appetite and digestion. The drug is primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes, while semaglutide is also available under other brand names for weight management.

Scientists are investigating whether these medicines could influence brain health through their effects on metabolism, inflammation and cardiovascular function. Improving metabolic health may help address some factors associated with neurological diseases, although the exact reasons behind the reported links remain unclear.

Does This Mean Ozempic Can Prevent Alzheimer’s?

Not yet. The study examined genetically predicted biological effects, rather than directly measuring disease prevention among people taking Ozempic.

Separate phase 3 EVOKE and EVOKE+ trials also found that oral semaglutide did not significantly slow clinical progression in people with early Alzheimer’s disease. However, this does not fully answer whether these medicines could influence the development of the disease before symptoms appear.

What Happens Next?

Scientists say further research, including well-designed clinical trials, is needed to determine whether these findings translate into real benefits for patients.

For now, Ozempic is not a proven treatment for preventing stroke or Alzheimer’s disease. Patients should continue following medical advice and should not change their medication based on these findings alone.

The study offers a promising direction for future research, but more evidence is needed to establish whether medicines designed for metabolic health can also protect the ageing brain.
