African Union urges urgent action to contain Ebola Outbreak across Africa

The African Union and Africa CDC call for stronger cooperation, faster decisions and emergency measures as the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak spreads across four African countries.

The African Union (AU) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have called for urgent and coordinated action to contain the spreading Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak across Africa. The organisations stressed the need for stronger cooperation, quick decisions and adequate resources to control the outbreak and improve public health preparedness.

The call followed a discussion held yesterday between AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya. They discussed measures to strengthen the continent’s response and improve preparedness for the outbreak.

Kaseya highlighted the importance of transparency, timely decision-making and the urgent mobilisation of resources to prevent the further spread of the disease. He stressed that African countries must work together to strengthen their public health systems and respond effectively to the growing health threat.

According to the information provided, confirmed cases of Bundibugyo Ebola have been reported in four African countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria. The outbreak has spread across three African regions, raising concerns about the need for a united continental response.

To strengthen coordination, Africa CDC is scheduled to convene an emergency ministerial meeting next Wednesday. The meeting will bring together ministers responsible for health, finance and transport to discuss measures to contain the outbreak.

The involvement of these ministries is expected to support a coordinated response, including better public health planning, resource mobilisation and transport-related coordination. Timely action and cooperation among governments will be important in controlling the spread of the disease.

The AU and Africa CDC have called on African countries to strengthen solidarity and take coordinated steps to address the outbreak. Their appeal highlights the importance of preparedness, transparency and sufficient resources in responding to public health emergencies.

As the situation develops, the upcoming ministerial meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for African leaders to discuss practical measures and strengthen collective efforts to contain the outbreak.

The organisations’ message is clear: African countries must act together and respond quickly to limit the spread of Ebola and protect public health across the continent.
