IndiaAI, ICMR partner to expand AI in healthcare

IndiaAI, ICMR partner to expand AI in healthcare

IndiaAI and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the responsible adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India’s healthcare sector. The agreement marks a significant step toward integrating advanced digital technologies into healthcare and biomedical research while ensuring ethical standards, privacy protection, and scalable implementation across the country.

The collaboration was formalized in New Delhi under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Through this partnership, IndiaAI and ICMR aim to build a nationally integrated and interoperable AI ecosystem that can improve healthcare delivery, strengthen research capabilities, and support public health initiatives.

According to the Ministry, the MoU combines IndiaAI’s technological infrastructure and AI ecosystem with ICMR’s extensive expertise in biomedical and health research. The partnership is expected to promote innovation in healthcare by leveraging AI tools for diagnosis, disease prediction, treatment planning, and healthcare management.

As part of the collaboration, ICMR will contribute anonymised and ethics-approved biomedical datasets, AI models, and toolkits developed under its Medical Information Data for AI Solutions (MIDAS) framework. These resources will be integrated into AIKosh, IndiaAI’s dedicated platform for datasets and AI innovation. The initiative is expected to support researchers, startups, developers, and healthcare institutions working on AI-driven healthcare solutions.

IndiaAI, on the other hand, will provide access to advanced GPU-based and high-performance computing infrastructure at subsidised rates under predefined service-level agreements. This support is expected to help researchers and innovators build scalable AI models capable of addressing critical healthcare challenges in India.

The partnership also focuses on skill development and capacity building in the AI and healthcare sectors. IndiaAI’s skilling initiatives will work alongside ICMR’s medical and scientific expertise to encourage innovation, research, and deployment of AI applications in healthcare. The collaboration aims to create opportunities for healthcare professionals, researchers, and technology developers to work together on real-world healthcare problems.

Officials stated that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting responsible and ethical AI adoption in India. Data privacy, regulatory compliance, transparency, and ethical governance are expected to remain central to the partnership. ICMR has already introduced ethical guidelines for AI applications in biomedical research and healthcare, emphasizing accountability and patient-centric use of AI technologies.

The collaboration is also expected to support the development of AI-based solutions for priority public health concerns using disease-burden data and biomedical research insights. Experts believe that AI can play a transformative role in enhancing healthcare accessibility, improving diagnostic accuracy, and strengthening preventive healthcare systems in India.

With healthcare increasingly embracing digital transformation, the IndiaAI-ICMR partnership is viewed as a major milestone in the country’s efforts to combine technology and medicine responsibly. By bringing together computing infrastructure, biomedical expertise, and ethical AI frameworks, the initiative aims to create innovative healthcare solutions that can benefit millions of people across India.
