Kerala is set to reposition and rebrand its globally recognised wellness tourism sector as the state witnesses a steady rise in foreign tourist arrivals and growing international interest in holistic health experiences. The initiative aims to strengthen Kerala’s standing as a premier wellness destination by expanding beyond traditional Ayurveda-based offerings and showcasing a broader range of health, rejuvenation, and lifestyle experiences.
The move comes at a time when Kerala’s tourism industry is experiencing strong growth. Foreign tourist arrivals in the state increased by more than 11 per cent in 2025, reaching over 8.21 lakh visitors, while the government is targeting the nine-lakh mark in 2026. Tourism revenue has also grown significantly, reflecting the increasing appeal of Kerala among international travellers.
Officials believe that the term “wellness tourism” better reflects evolving global travel trends, where visitors seek comprehensive experiences that combine preventive healthcare, mental well-being, fitness, nutrition, nature-based therapies, and traditional healing systems. Kerala’s wellness sector, historically centred on Ayurveda, is now expected to integrate modern health and lifestyle concepts to appeal to a wider international audience.
The state has long been recognised as a leading destination for Ayurveda and natural healing therapies. However, tourism authorities and industry stakeholders are exploring ways to modernise the sector’s image and create a stronger global brand identity. The rebranding effort is expected to highlight Kerala’s unique blend of traditional knowledge, medical expertise, cultural heritage, and natural landscapes.
Industry experts note that wellness travellers generally spend more than conventional tourists and often stay for longer durations. This makes the segment particularly valuable for Kerala’s tourism economy. Emerging markets such as Germany and Russia have shown growing interest in wellness-focused travel, while visitors from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Malaysia, Australia, Oman, and the Maldives continue to contribute significantly to international arrivals.
The state government is also expanding promotional activities in domestic and overseas markets to attract high-value travellers. Recent initiatives include tourism roadshows, business-to-business tourism events, and campaigns highlighting experiential tourism products. Wellness tourism is expected to be one of the key pillars of these marketing efforts.
Alongside branding efforts, Kerala is focusing on strengthening tourism infrastructure and developing new wellness destinations. Projects related to Ayurveda villages, integrated wellness centres, and premium health retreats are being explored to enhance visitor experiences and increase the state’s competitiveness in the global wellness tourism market.
Tourism stakeholders believe the rebranding exercise will help Kerala align with changing traveller preferences while reinforcing its reputation as “God’s Own Country.” By combining traditional healing practices with contemporary wellness concepts, the state aims to attract a new generation of international visitors seeking meaningful, health-focused travel experiences. As global demand for wellness tourism continues to grow, Kerala hopes the renewed strategy will further strengthen its position as one of the world’s leading wellness destinations.
