A team headed by Dr. Pavan Pai, Consultant Neurology and Neurointerventions at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira road, successfully treated a Covid patient with a recurrence stroke. The patient was admitted for left-sided facial weakness and imbalance and speech difficulty was discharged without any problems.
A stroke tends to occur when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and bleeds, or when there’s a blockage in the blood supply to the brain. There has been a rise in the number of patients with stroke. Similarly, Vaishali Pandhre, a resident of Mira Road, who is a housewife, was doing her daily chores when she suddenly collapsed. Her family members panicked and admitted her to Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.
Dr Pavan Pai, Consultant Neurology and Neurointerventions at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira road said, “The patient was admitted with left-sided facial weakness and speaking difficulty. She was a known Diabetic and hypertensive. Her angiography of the brain revealed that she had a small brain stroke on the right side and the brain artery supplying the blood to the right side had narrowed by 75%. She was also Covid positive and was shifted to Covid ICU for further management. The patient was discharged and was scheduled to undergo a routine carotid angioplasty and stenting after 14 days of COVID treatment.
Dr Pai added, “In the view of her Covid status, the patient suffered from a new stroke and was readmitted for left-sided imbalance. Her MR angiography showed that she had a recurrence of stroke and the narrowing of the artery on the right side of the brain increased from 70% to 90%. There was a near-total blockage on the right side of the carotid artery. The patient underwent an urgent right internal carotid angioplasty and stenting procedure under local anesthesia
Dr. Jinendra Jain, Consultant Physician, who was involved in COVID management at Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road said, “The procedure is done to open the blocked artery in the brain, restore the blood supply, and prevent stroke. A small stent is placed in the clogged carotid artery that is located on both sides of the neck. The stent will allow the artery to open and prevent it from narrowing further. This procedure is ideal for stroke patients who have a blockage of 70% or more. In this case thickening of blood due to COVID infection was the cause of recurrent stroke. The procedure lasted for two hours. The patient was observed in the ICU for a few days. She was shifted in the ward and she went home walking without any weakness. If the patient wouldn’t have been treated at the right time then she might have got a bigger stroke which would have been fatal.
