Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has launched a nationwide annual health check-up initiative for workers aged 40 years and above under the new Labour Codes. The programme aims to strengthen occupational healthcare and improve access to preventive medical services for India’s workforce.
The initiative was formally launched from the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation Medical College and Hospital in Basaidarapur, New Delhi, with simultaneous events organized across 11 ESIC hospitals in different states. Senior public representatives, including labour ministers, Members of Parliament, and state officials, participated in the launch programmes.
The health check-up programme is part of the government’s broader labour reforms introduced through the four New Labour Codes, which consolidate 29 central labour laws into four major categories. These reforms are intended to simplify compliance procedures, encourage formal employment, and expand social security coverage for workers across sectors.
A key feature of the new labour framework is the mandatory annual health screening for workers aged 40 years and above. Under the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Scheme, beneficiaries will receive these medical examinations through ESIC’s nationwide network of hospitals and healthcare centres. The initiative focuses on early diagnosis, preventive healthcare, and regular monitoring of workers’ health conditions.
The programme also gives special attention to workers employed in hazardous industries. Employees handling chemicals, toxic substances, heavy machinery, or working in dangerous environments will be required to undergo medical examinations regardless of age. This measure is aimed at detecting occupational illnesses early and ensuring safer working conditions.
According to the government, the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Shramev Jayate” vision, which emphasizes dignity of labour and stronger social protection for workers. Officials stated that the programme would help improve workforce productivity by promoting better health awareness and preventive care practices among employees.
The Code on Social Security, 2020, has further expanded the reach of welfare measures by extending coverage to unorganized, gig, and platform workers. It also provides for the creation of a Social Security Fund and wider ESIC benefits. Through this latest health initiative, the government aims to bring a larger section of workers under organized healthcare monitoring.
The programme will also involve systematic maintenance of health records and periodic monitoring to ensure long-term well-being. Health data collected through annual screenings is expected to help in identifying common occupational health risks and planning targeted interventions in the future.
Overall, the nationwide health check-up initiative marks a major step toward strengthening occupational healthcare systems in India. By combining preventive healthcare, regular medical monitoring, and expanded social security coverage, the government aims to improve the quality of life and long-term well-being of millions of workers across the country.
