Yoga Boosts India’s Global Wellness Identity: Minister

Yoga Boosts India’s Global Wellness Identity: Minister

India is strengthening its position as a global hub for wellness and healthcare, with yoga playing a central role in shaping this identity, according to Union Minister of State for AYUSH and Health, Prataprao Jadhav. Speaking at a large-scale yoga event held in Hyderabad as part of the countdown to the International Day of Yoga 2026, the minister highlighted how yoga has evolved into a worldwide movement promoting holistic well-being.

The event, organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga at Kanha Shanti Vanam, witnessed participation from thousands of people who performed yoga together, even setting a record for mass participation. The gathering reflected the growing popularity of yoga not just in India but across the globe, where it is increasingly embraced as a tool for physical health, mental clarity, and emotional balance.

Jadhav emphasised that yoga is no longer limited to its origins as an ancient Indian practice but has become a key contributor to global healthcare systems. He noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, yoga has transformed into a worldwide movement that integrates traditional wisdom with modern health needs. This evolution has significantly enhanced India’s image as a centre for holistic healthcare and wellness tourism.

Highlighting its broader impact, the minister described yoga as a practical and cost-effective solution to modern lifestyle challenges such as stress, pollution, and sedentary habits. He pointed out that as countries seek preventive and sustainable healthcare approaches, yoga offers a natural and accessible method to improve overall well-being.

The government is also actively promoting year-round engagement with yoga through initiatives like the Yoga 365 campaign, which encourages citizens to adopt yoga as a daily practice rather than limiting it to special occasions. A 100-day free training programme has been launched as part of this effort, aiming to involve over one lakh participants and provide certification opportunities.

In addition to domestic efforts, India is expanding the global footprint of yoga through international collaborations and events. The minister acknowledged initiatives such as yoga sessions conducted at global platforms like the World Expo, which help showcase India’s wellness traditions to a wider audience. These efforts are contributing to the country’s growing influence in the global health and wellness sector.

The integration of yoga with modern healthcare systems is another key focus area. Increasing scientific research and institutional support are helping validate yoga’s effectiveness in managing lifestyle diseases and improving preventive care. This blend of tradition and science is further strengthening India’s leadership in wellness innovation.

Officials also linked the promotion of yoga with the broader vision of building a healthier and more disciplined society as part of India’s long-term development goals. By encouraging widespread participation and awareness, the government aims to make wellness an integral part of everyday life.

Overall, the emphasis on yoga reflects India’s strategic effort to position itself as a global leader in holistic health. With growing international acceptance and continuous policy support, yoga is emerging as a defining element of the country’s identity in the global wellness and healthcare landscape.
