Amazon Expands Health Cover for 90,000 Delivery Staff

Amazon Expands Health Cover for 90,000 Delivery Staff

Amazon India has expanded its health and insurance benefits for nearly 90,000 delivery associates working across its last-mile delivery network in the country. The initiative is aimed at improving the well-being, financial security, and healthcare access of gig workers involved in the company’s logistics operations.

Under the updated programme, delivery associates will now receive enhanced outpatient department (OPD) coverage, hospitalisation support, and accident insurance benefits. The company said the new measures are designed to help workers manage routine medical expenses as well as financial risks arising from temporary or permanent disabilities.

Amazon stated that the expanded coverage includes mediclaim benefits of up to ₹1.5 lakh, OPD expense support of up to ₹10,000, and group personal accident coverage of up to ₹10 lakh. The healthcare benefits will also extend to up to three family members of each delivery associate annually.

The company has additionally introduced unlimited multilingual virtual doctor consultations and two free in-person OPD visits per family every year. Associates will also receive discounts on pharmacy services, diagnostic tests, dental care, and eye care treatments.

As part of the initiative, Amazon has begun organising health camps across delivery stations in multiple metro and Tier-II cities. These camps provide free medical check-ups, including eye examinations, dental screening, BMI assessments, and consultations with general physicians. The programme began earlier this year and is expected to expand to more locations across India.

The company said the healthcare expansion is linked to its recent ₹2,800 crore investment aimed at strengthening operations infrastructure and improving associate welfare. According to Amazon India’s Director of Operations, Salim Memon, worker safety and well-being remain a priority as the company continues to scale its logistics network in India.

Amazon has also introduced several support measures focused on workplace safety and emergency assistance. Delivery associates reportedly have access to emergency ambulance services across hundreds of cities through partnerships with healthcare providers. The company is also expanding “Project Ashray,” which creates dedicated rest points for delivery workers equipped with seating, drinking water, charging facilities, and first-aid support.

The move reflects growing attention toward gig worker welfare in India’s rapidly expanding e-commerce and delivery sectors. Experts have increasingly called for stronger social security protections, insurance support, and healthcare access for delivery workers who often operate under physically demanding conditions.

Industry observers believe Amazon’s decision could encourage other e-commerce and logistics companies to improve benefits for frontline workers. The development also highlights the increasing role of corporate welfare programmes in addressing healthcare and safety concerns within India’s gig economy.
