The emerging research is prompting healthcare experts to advocate for closer integration between dentistry and mainstream medicine.
Scientists are focusing on the oral microbiome—the diverse community of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that naturally inhabit the mouth. While most of these microbes are beneficial, certain harmful bacteria can multiply beneath the gum line, causing inflammation that leads to gingivitis and periodontitis. If left untreated, severe gum disease can damage the tissues and bones supporting the teeth, increasing the risk of tooth loss and potentially contributing to broader health complications.
Researchers believe the connection lies in chronic inflammation. Inflamed gums allow bacteria and their by-products to enter the bloodstream during routine activities such as chewing, brushing, or flossing. Although the immune system usually clears these bacteria, repeated exposure may contribute to persistent inflammation that affects blood vessels, the heart, and other organs. Experimental immune-modulating drugs designed to calm the body’s inflammatory response have shown encouraging early results in reducing gum inflammation. At the same time, biotechnology companies are working on therapeutic vaccines intended to slow the progression of periodontal disease by targeting its underlying biological mechanisms.
Advances in digital health are also transforming dental care. Artificial intelligence, smart sensors, and diagnostic technologies are being used to detect oral diseases earlier, personalise treatment plans, and monitor disease progression more effectively. Improved integration of medical and dental records is expected to strengthen collaboration between physicians and dentists, enabling a more holistic approach to patient care. Healthcare experts believe that primary care doctors may increasingly refer patients with diabetes or cardiovascular risk to dental specialists, while dentists could help identify early signs of systemic diseases during routine examinations.
The growing body of evidence has also intensified calls for greater investment in preventive dental care. Nearly half of adults over the age of 30 experience some form of periodontal disease, with prevalence increasing significantly among older adults. Experts argue that improving access to routine dental check-ups, professional cleanings, and preventive oral healthcare could help reduce the burden of chronic diseases while improving quality of life and healthy ageing.
Although researchers caution that oral bacteria are only one of many factors influencing heart disease and other chronic illnesses, maintaining good oral hygiene is increasingly recognised as an essential component of overall health. Regular brushing, flossing, professional dental care, and timely treatment of gum disease may not only protect teeth and gums but also contribute to better cardiovascular health and long-term wellbeing.
