Urban workforce in India faces health risks well before middle age: Survey

India’s urban workforce is facing rising health risks, with blood sugar problems, stress and vitamin deficiencies appearing well before middle age.

Urban workforce in India faces health risks well before middle age: Survey

Health risks among India’s urban workforce are emerging earlier than expected, with problems linked to blood sugar, nutrition, sleep, stress and liver health appearing among employees well before middle age, according to the Workforce Health Index (WHI) 2026 by Loop Health.

The second edition of the survey analysed more than 816,000 lab values from 11,400 health reports, along with over 9,000 survey responses from urban working Indians. The study also included more than 74,000 hospital claims for the first time, giving a broader picture of employee health across India.

One of the key findings was the high level of glucose-related health concerns. The survey found that 31.3% of employees tested in 2026 showed glucose dysfunction. Nutritional deficiencies were also widespread, with 81.4% of Vitamin D reports below the sufficiency threshold, while 73.9% showed low Vitamin B12 levels.

The findings highlight why preventive healthcare is becoming important for India’s working population. Many of these health issues may develop before employees experience clear symptoms, potentially making early testing and medical guidance important.

The survey also examined how professionals seek health information. While 54% of respondents said they consulted doctors or healthcare professionals, 19.8% reported using AI tools such as ChatGPT, while 19.7% relied on Google for health-related information.

Loop Health Co-Founder and COO Ryan Singh said the early appearance of these risks was a major finding of the report.

“We are also seeing high stress, widespread Vitamin D and B12 deficiencies, and a clear gap between the health risks people have and the care they actually seek,” Singh said.

He added that many warning signs can be identified before people feel unwell, making early awareness, medical guidance and preventive action important.

The survey suggests that employers and employees may need to focus more on regular health checks, nutrition, stress management and timely medical care as part of workplace health programmes.
