Beyond diet and exercise: Urban lifestyles reshape heart health

Stress, poor sleep, long sitting hours and inactivity are emerging as key heart-health concerns as modern urban lifestyles become increasingly demanding.

Beyond diet and exercise: Urban lifestyles reshape heart health

On World Heart Day 2026, cardiologists are highlighting how modern urban lifestyles are changing the way people need to think about heart health. Along with diet, exercise, smoking and cholesterol, experts are drawing attention to chronic stress, poor sleep, long sitting hours, work pressure and physical inactivity.

For India’s urban workforce, the challenge is often not a lack of awareness but difficulty maintaining healthy habits while managing long working hours and personal responsibilities. Constant connectivity can reduce time for exercise, nutritious meals and adequate sleep.

Dr Anand Kumar M, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at SPARSH Hospital, Yeshwanthpur, Bengaluru, said cardiovascular health needs to be viewed as part of overall lifestyle.

Beyond diet and exercise: Urban lifestyles reshape heart health

“Chronic stress, lack of proper sleep, long working hours, and sedentary behavior combined might lead to an environment that is not good for the heart,” he said, adding that identifying unhealthy patterns early can help people make sustainable changes.

Sleep has also emerged as an important part of cardiovascular prevention. Dr (Major) Abhinav Srivastava, Consultant – Cardiology, Regency Hospital, Gorakhpur, said adequate sleep should not be treated as optional.

“A heart-healthy life is not just about one change, but about establishing a daily routine which will provide proper rest to the body along with some physical activity,” he said.

Another concern is prolonged sitting. Desk-based jobs, long commutes and screen-based leisure can leave people inactive for much of the day, even if they exercise occasionally.

Dr Amar Singhal, Director Cardiology at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, Delhi, said an hour at the gym may not offset an otherwise sedentary routine. He stressed incorporating movement throughout the day, including short periods of activity and avoiding prolonged sitting.

Experts also emphasised the need to move from reactive to preventive healthcare. Dr Vijay Kumar Bahl of Metro Group of Hospitals said people should not wait for symptoms such as chest pain before paying attention to cardiovascular health.

A heart-conscious lifestyle can include regular physical activity, adequate sleep, nutritious food, avoiding smoking, maintaining a healthy weight and controlling blood pressure and diabetes. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol can also help identify risks early.

The message for World Heart Day 2026 is that heart health is shaped not only in hospitals and clinics, but also by everyday choices at work and at home.
