Common heart failure myths can delay timely care, experts urge better awareness

Understanding heart failure myths can help patients spot warning signs early, follow treatment and reduce the risk of future complications.

Common heart failure myths can delay timely care, experts urge better awareness

Heart failure does not mean the heart has stopped working. The chronic condition can worsen over time, making early recognition, regular medical care and continued treatment important for patients and families.

Heart failure remains one of the most misunderstood heart conditions, with common myths sometimes leading patients to delay medical care. The condition affects millions of people worldwide, and India is home to one of the largest populations of heart failure patients.

Common heart failure myths can delay timely care, experts urge better awareness.

Heart failure occurs when the heart continues to function but cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. Common symptoms include breathlessness, fatigue, swelling in the ankles and reduced ability to perform activities that were previously manageable.

One major misconception is that feeling better means the condition has disappeared. Heart failure is generally a chronic and progressive condition. Patients can have periods when they feel stable, followed by episodes when symptoms worsen and may require urgent treatment or hospitalisation.

Another concern is the risk of future hospitalisation. Research cited in the provided clinical information indicates that nearly 30% of people who have recently experienced heart failure may be readmitted within one year after discharge.Treatment can improve symptoms and help stabilise the condition, but the underlying heart problem can remain. Patients may gradually move from chronic, stable heart failure to an acute episode because of different triggers.

Clinical evidence also indicates that patients can remain at risk of hospitalisation or death even while receiving foundational medical therapy. About one in seven patients may still face such adverse events within 18 months despite background treatment, highlighting the importance of continued medical care and newer treatment approaches where appropriate.

Doctors advise patients not to ignore new or changing symptoms. Regular follow-up appointments and taking medicines as prescribed can play an important role in long-term management.

With greater awareness, patients and families can better understand heart failure, recognise warning signs earlier and seek medical advice without delay.
