CDSCO urges responsible use of painkillers and antibiotics to protect kidney health

CDSCO urges safe use of painkillers and antibiotics, warning against self-medication and highlighting the risk of kidney damage.

CDSCO urges responsible use of painkillers and antibiotics to protect kidney health

India’s drug regulator, CDSCO, has urged people to use painkillers and antibiotics responsibly, warning that improper use may increase the risk of kidney damage. The advisory stresses the need for medical supervision, correct dosages and appropriate treatment durations.

CDSCO Advises Responsible Use of Painkillers and Antibiotics to Reduce Risk of Kidney Disease

Regulator Highlights Risks of Improper Medicine Use

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has advised against the indiscriminate use of painkillers and antibiotics due to their potential impact on kidney health. Through its circular, the regulator emphasized that these medicines should be used only when medically necessary and under the guidance of a registered medical practitioner.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are commonly used to manage pain and inflammation, can pose risks to people with existing kidney problems. CDSCO advised individuals with kidney disease or other risk factors for renal impairment to inform their healthcare providers before taking these medicines.

The regulator also urged the public to avoid self-medicating with antibiotics. Antibiotics are generally not required for uncomplicated viral infections, and unnecessary use can contribute to antimicrobial resistance.

Doctors and Pharmacists Asked to Promote Safe Use

CDSCO called on healthcare professionals to consider a patient’s medical history, age, existing health conditions, other medicines and kidney-related risk factors before prescribing NSAIDs or antibiotics.

It further advised pharmacists and retailers not to encourage or support the self-medication of antibiotics or prescription-only NSAIDs. Medicines should be supplied in accordance with applicable prescription requirements.

Awareness Campaign to Support Kidney Health

The drug regulator has requested drug control authorities in states and Union Territories to spread awareness about the dangers of inappropriate medicine use. The initiative targets healthcare professionals, pharmacists, retailers and the general public.

Through these measures, CDSCO aims to encourage responsible prescribing, reduce unnecessary antibiotic consumption and promote safer medication practices. The advisory also highlights the importance of consulting a healthcare professional before using medicines that may affect kidney function.
