Google Expands AI Healthcare Push in India

Google Expands AI Healthcare Push in India

Google has expanded its artificial intelligence (AI) healthcare initiatives in India by strengthening its collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and launching new public health programmes aimed at improving disease detection, clinical decision-making, and digital healthcare delivery. The move reflects the company’s growing commitment to supporting India’s digital health ecosystem through AI-powered innovations.

A major highlight of the initiative is the expansion of Google’s partnership with AIIMS, where researchers are using the company’s open-source multimodal MedGemma AI models to develop healthcare solutions tailored to India’s needs. Building on earlier work in dermatology and outpatient triage, the collaboration is now focused on creating AI tools for the diagnosis and management of leprosy as well as sexual and reproductive health conditions. These models are designed to analyse both medical images and text, enabling healthcare professionals to make faster and more accurate clinical decisions.

Google and AIIMS also plan to make these India-specific AI models available to developers and researchers, encouraging the creation of innovative digital health applications that address local healthcare challenges. By promoting open-source technologies, the initiative aims to accelerate research, improve access to advanced medical tools, and strengthen the country’s broader health innovation ecosystem.

In addition to research collaborations, Google announced several public health initiatives that leverage AI to improve healthcare accessibility and efficiency. These efforts focus on supporting frontline healthcare workers, enhancing disease detection, and streamlining patient care through intelligent digital solutions. The company believes AI can play a critical role in expanding quality healthcare services, particularly in underserved and remote regions where access to specialists remains limited.

The healthcare announcements were part of Google’s broader India AI strategy unveiled during Google I/O Connect India 2026. Alongside healthcare, the company introduced initiatives in education, language technologies, cybersecurity, and enterprise AI infrastructure. Google reiterated its commitment to developing AI solutions that are responsible, inclusive, and designed to address India’s unique social and economic needs.

The company also highlighted its efforts to strengthen India’s AI ecosystem by supporting developers, startups, researchers, and public institutions. Through open AI models, cloud infrastructure, and collaborative research programmes, Google aims to encourage innovation while ensuring that AI technologies remain accessible to a wider community of users and organisations.

Experts believe AI has the potential to transform healthcare by improving diagnostic accuracy, reducing the burden on medical professionals, enabling personalised treatment, and expanding access to quality care. Google’s latest initiatives seek to complement India’s ongoing digital health transformation by integrating AI into clinical practice and public health systems in a safe and scalable manner.

With its expanded partnership with AIIMS and new public health programmes, Google is reinforcing its long-term commitment to advancing AI-driven healthcare innovation in India. The initiatives are expected to support medical research, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to building a more efficient, accessible, and technology-enabled healthcare system for the future.
