Pune: A team headed by Dr Narendra Vaidya, Joint Replacement and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lokmanya Hospital, Pune successfully treated a 75-year-old woman from Navi Mumbai suffering from arthritis for many years. After undergoing robotic surgery, the woman can stand on her feet again, and has resumed her daily routine now.
Sunanda Metkar, a 75-year-old resident of Belapur, Navi Mumbai, was jolted out of her normal routine owing to joint pain. Slowly, she found it difficult to carry on with her daily activities with ease. She needed constant assistance from her three daughters to walk, get up, wear clothes, and even hold the glass. After the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, her family members consulted various medicos, but the pain did not subside. Later, the patient became bedridden during the lockdown as her health deteriorated further. The patient was then referred to Lokmanya Hospital.
Dr Narendra Vaidya, Joint Replacement and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Lokmanya Hospital, Pune said, “The patient had rheumatoid arthritis which is commonly seen in women when compared to men. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune condition that leads to pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of function in the joints. The joint pain is seen after menopause. The patient’s leg joints were worn out due to a delay in treatment, and she couldn’t even walk.”
The lady underwent robotic surgery as robotic alignment makes it more useful to achieve surgical accuracy. After the surgery, she was able to walk the next day without any support.
“We were worried and panicked as my mother was unable to walk due to arthritis during the lockdown, and could not do her daily chores independently. Since I had to move out of the house for work, no one was at home with my mother. Although she was thirsty, she could not get out of bed to fetch water on her own. But, she was determined to stand on her feet and never gave up. My mother is a fighter, and with the limitless efforts of Lokmanya Hospital, she was able to move freely again. She is absolutely fine now, and there is no discomfort or pain at all. I urge everyone to take utmost care of themselves, do not ignore any symptoms, and seek timely medical attention,” concluded Sonali Metkar, patient’s daughter.
