Integrated registry platform boosts heart and stroke research

An integrated digital registry links cardiovascular data across 27 modules, supporting patient monitoring and real-world research using millions of hospital records.

Integrated registry platform boosts heart and stroke research

A unified electronic medical record-based platform has captured data from nearly 3 million hospital visits, offering new opportunities for cardiovascular research, patient monitoring and improved healthcare.

An integrated registry platform has demonstrated its potential to strengthen cardiovascular and cerebrovascular research by bringing patient data together across multiple clinical areas. The system, implemented in routine clinical care between January 1, 2014, and May 31, 2026, was designed to address fragmented medical records and improve the tracking of patient outcomes over time.

The platform integrated 27 disease- and procedure-specific registry modules across nine clinical areas. During the study period, it recorded 2,890,478 outpatient and inpatient cases involving 396,481 patients.

Researchers used electronic medical records (EMRs) to identify eligible patients and generate registry entries through routine clinical workflows, specialist reviews and procedure-based confirmation. Screening identified 80,478 patients who met the criteria for inclusion in the registries.

The initiative involved 64 contributors, including 61 medical experts and personnel from data science and administration.

Better data collection and patient feedback

The platform supported 2,633 operationally available variable rows, including 329 common variables that could be used across different registry modules. Information on laboratory results, medicines, procedures, treatments and hospital visits was collected directly from electronic medical records. Clinicians entered additional information that required medical interpretation.

Researchers reported high levels of data completeness across the evaluated disease areas. The platform also introduced mobile-based questionnaires to collect patients’ feedback on their health and treatment experiences.

During implementation, 58,315 questionnaires were administered to 23,537 individuals. Of these, 11,488 patients responded, representing a patient-level response rate of 48.8 per cent. New outpatient visits recorded the highest response rate at 71.9 per cent.

Supporting future cardiovascular research

The platform also allowed confirmed clinical events to be shared across relevant registries, reducing duplication and improving coordination. A consistency analysis found 100 per cent agreement for selected events shared between modules.

Researchers established governance procedures through 19 dedicated meetings focused on data quality, access, audits and long-term management.

The authors concluded that the platform could support clinical monitoring, healthcare quality assessment, observational studies and patient-centred research. However, further prospective evaluation is needed to assess its long-term performance, data linkage and sustainability.

The findings highlight how integrated digital health systems could help researchers generate real-world evidence and improve the understanding of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
