ECHO India and PGICH Noida assess progress of National Program on Thalassemia Control

Noida: ECHO India, in partnership with the Post Graduate Institute of Child Health (PGICH) Noida, is currently conducting a mid-term review of the National Program on the Prevention and Control of Beta Thalassemia and Other Hemoglobinopathies in India.

Launched in April 2023, the initiative aimed to equip healthcare professionals across the nation with the necessary tools to combat Beta Thalassemia and other Hemoglobinopathies. PGICH Noida, known for its excellence in pediatric healthcare and education, serves as the national hub for this program.

Dr. Nita Radhakrishnan, Associate Professor & Department Head of Pediatric Hematology Oncology at PGICH Noida, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “The burden of Hemoglobinopathies on Indian children remains substantial. Our goal is to empower a network of healthcare providers nationwide to ensure timely diagnosis and effective management, particularly among vulnerable communities.”

The mid-term review aims to evaluate the progress of the program, identify any challenges encountered, and refine strategies for greater impact. This ongoing assessment highlights the commitment of ECHO India and PGICH Noida to drive sustainable change in healthcare delivery, ultimately ensuring healthier futures for all.

Dr. (Col) Kumud Rai, Chairman & Managing Trustee of ECHO India, underscored the effectiveness of the ECHO Model of telementoring in disseminating knowledge and supporting India’s efforts to eliminate Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies.

Dr. Sandeep Bhalla, Associate Vice President of ECHO India, expressed gratitude to all partners involved in the program, including PGICH Noida, NHM Madhya Pradesh, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). He highlighted the instrumental role of collaborative efforts in mentoring thousands of healthcare workers, emphasizing the collective aim to deliver quality care to individuals combating rare diseases like Thalassemia.

The mid-term review signifies a crucial step forward in the fight against Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies, demonstrating the dedication of stakeholders to address these health challenges effectively.
