Diabetes linked to changes in kidney function and electrolyte levels study finds

Study finds differences in kidney function and electrolyte levels among people with diabetes, highlighting the need for cautious clinical interpretation.

Diabetes linked to changes in kidney function and electrolyte levels study finds

A comparative study of 300 individuals found differences in kidney function markers and electrolyte levels among people with diabetes, although the clinical significance of many changes remains uncertain.

Study Compares Patients With and Without Diabetes

A cross-sectional study involving 300 individuals has identified differences in renal function and electrolyte levels between people with diabetes and healthy participants. The research included 150 patients with diabetes and 150 healthy individuals, aiming to examine how diabetes was associated with kidney-related laboratory measures.

The study compared urea, uric acid, creatinine, calcium, sodium, potassium, and chloride levels. Researchers also examined the relationship between random blood glucose and these measurements.

Patients with diabetes had higher mean creatinine and urea levels than healthy participants. Creatinine measured 0.5926 in the diabetes group, compared with 0.5463 in the healthy group. Mean urea levels were 25.47 and 22.25, respectively.

Differences in Electrolyte Levels

The researchers also observed changes in electrolyte measurements. Potassium levels were higher among patients with diabetes, while sodium and calcium levels were lower than those recorded in healthy individuals.

Random blood glucose showed a weak positive correlation with urea and a weak negative correlation with creatinine. A moderate negative correlation was observed between blood glucose and sodium, representing the strongest reported relationship in the study.

However, the researchers highlighted that these correlations were modest and did not establish that changes in blood glucose directly caused changes in kidney function or electrolyte levels.

Findings Require Clinical Interpretation

Logistic regression identified urea, uric acid, sodium, and potassium as factors independently associated with diabetes. Higher urea and potassium were associated with increased odds of diabetes, while uric acid and sodium showed inverse associations.

Despite the statistically significant findings, the researchers stressed the importance of cautious interpretation. The absolute differences in several laboratory measures were limited, and statistical significance alone does not establish clinical importance.

Because the study used a cross-sectional design, it could not determine cause-and-effect relationships or how these measurements changed over time. The authors recommended further longitudinal research to assess the clinical relevance of the findings and explore the potential role of renal and electrolyte measurements in diabetes monitoring.
