Diabetes linked to changes in kidney function and electrolyte levels study finds

Diabetes linked to changes in kidney function and electrolyte levels study finds

A comparative study of 300 people has found that diabetes is associated with changes in kidney function markers and electrolyte levels. While several differences were statistically significant, researchers noted that their relatively small size calls for careful clinical interpretation.

Study Examines Kidney Health in People With Diabetes

A cross-sectional study involving 300 participants examined the relationship between diabetes, kidney function and electrolyte balance. The research included 150 patients with diabetes and 150 healthy individuals.

Researchers compared blood markers such as urea, uric acid and creatinine, along with electrolyte levels, including sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride. They also investigated whether random blood glucose levels were related to these measurements.

The study found that people with diabetes had higher average urea and creatinine levels than healthy participants. Mean urea levels were 25.47 in the diabetes group, compared with 22.25 in the healthy group. Creatinine levels were also higher among patients with diabetes.

Differences in Sodium, Potassium and Calcium

The researchers observed differences in several electrolytes. Potassium levels were higher among people with diabetes, while sodium and calcium levels were slightly lower compared with healthy individuals.

Statistical analysis showed a weak positive relationship between random blood glucose and urea, while creatinine had a weak negative correlation with blood glucose. Sodium showed the strongest reported relationship, with a moderate negative correlation.

However, the authors emphasized that these relationships were modest and did not establish that changes in blood glucose directly caused changes in kidney function or electrolyte levels.

Findings Require Further Research

Logistic regression analysis identified urea, uric acid, sodium and potassium as factors independently associated with diabetes. These statistical associations do not establish cause and effect.

The study’s cross-sectional design means that researchers could identify differences between groups but could not determine how these measurements changed over time or whether diabetes directly caused the observed results.

The findings highlight the importance of monitoring kidney function and electrolyte levels in people with diabetes. However, further longitudinal research is needed to understand the clinical significance of these differences and their potential role in patient care.
