Dengue cases reach 156 in Bhopal, Health Department steps up prevention drive

Bhopal has reported 156 dengue cases so far in 2026, prompting the health department to intensify mosquito-control measures and public awareness campaigns across the district. Officials say the situation remains under control, but teams are continuing inspections and preventive activities in areas considered vulnerable to dengue.

According to a press release issued on Monday, health department teams have surveyed around 3.75 lakh households and 27 lakh containers to identify mosquito breeding sites. The drive aims to reduce mosquito populations and prevent the spread of dengue, malaria and chikungunya.

The department is conducting regular fever surveys, inspecting mosquito larvae, removing breeding sites and carrying out insecticide spraying. These measures are intended to identify potential risks early and reduce the chances of mosquito-borne infections spreading in residential areas.

18 vulnerable areas under special surveillance

The health department has identified around 18 areas in Bhopal district for focused preventive action. The selection is based on dengue case patterns recorded over the past three years.

Teams are conducting regular inspections in these locations and taking steps to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. The special surveillance is also aimed at detecting possible cases at an early stage and ensuring timely preventive action.

Officials have said that monitoring and control activities are continuing across the district as part of the wider prevention drive.

Five centres provide dengue testing

To support early diagnosis, all five designated sentinel centres in Bhopal district remain operational and offer ELISA testing facilities. These centres include the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC), Gandhi Medical College (GMC), JP Hospital and Civil Hospital in Bairagarh.

The availability of testing facilities is expected to support the identification of dengue infections and help healthcare teams respond to suspected cases.

The health department has urged residents to cooperate with inspection teams and take preventive steps at home. People should regularly check their surroundings, remove stagnant water from containers and prevent water from collecting in places where mosquitoes can breed. With 156 cases reported this year, authorities are continuing surveillance and public awareness efforts to limit further transmission and protect residents from mosquito-borne diseases.
